Ivrea is famed for food-fighting carnival festivities.
One in all Italy’s most weird Carnevale traditions takes place in Ivrea, a city close to Turin famed for its carnival celebrations, notably the Battle of the Oranges.
Staged throughout the ultimate days of Carnevale, the spectacle evokes the historic defiance of the city’s inhabitants who rose up in opposition to their tyrannical overlord within the Center Ages after he tried to rape the daughter of a miller, or “mugnaia“, on her marriage ceremony night time.

This wrestle for freedom is commemorated within the annual Carnevale battle that pits 9 groups of aranceri orange handlers on foot – representing the individuals – in opposition to armoured aranceri in horse-drawn carriages – representing the tyrant.

The battle unfolds over three days main as much as Shrove Tuesday: in 2024 the dates are Sunday 11, Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 February.
The motion takes place within the city’s historic centre, with numerous areas assigned to the taking part groups, recognised by their distinctive colors.

Organisers say that the hundreds of oranges used within the battle should not appropriate for business functions and that afterwards the stays are collected and used to supply a high-quality compost for agricultural use.
